Have you ever wondered what a toga really is? Just keep reading and your question will be answered. A toga is a distinctive piece of clothing that was warn by Ancient Romans. This garment was made roughly around 20 feet long and it was wrapped around ones body and normally worn over a tunic.

The garment or toga was made mostly of wool and more then likely the tunic was made of linen. It is believed that somewhere after the 2nd century BC the toga was worn only by men and not only that but only Roman Citizens. Women could not wear this type of clothing they had to wear what they call a stola.

Of course as always as time went on styles do change and so did this way of dressing. In much later years the Romans adopted what we know now as a shirt which only the Greeks and the Etruscans would ware. Wearing such clothing became very bulky during a time of war.

It is reported that in times of peace that wearing a toga was superseded by what is called a laena which is a buttoned or closed cloak, but the toga did still remain the main dress of the empire for years to come.
